Billy Lynn Ball
Billy Lynn Ball, 79, of Goodyear died June 22, 2013.

Mr. Ball was born May 29, 1934, at home in Garrad County, Ky., to Charles and Virginia Ball.

He served in the Marine Corps and graduated from the University of Kentucky with a civil engineering degree, then moved to California where he lived until 1991 when he moved to Goodyear.

He is survived by his second wife, Lana Lee Ball of Temecula, Calif.; one daughter, Teresa Ball; one son, Lafe Ball; one stepdaughter, Kim Purdue; two stepsons, Brian Baker and Eric Baker; and 11 grandchildren.

A memorial will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at his house, 11297 S. Santa Fe Lane in Goodyear. Services will be July 26 at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma, Calif.

Jessie Castro
Jessie Castro, 85, of Buckeye died June 22, 2013, in Avondale.

Mrs. Castro lived in Arizona for 44 years.

She is survived by three children, Linda, Cruz and Manuel; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. June 30 at Advantage Crystal Rose Funeral Home, 9155 W. Van Buren St. in Tolleson. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. July 1 at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, 320 N. 20th Drive in Phoenix. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, 2300 W. Van Buren St. in Phoenix.


Charles Brooks Grierson II
Charles Brooks Grierson II, 85, of Avondale died June 21, 2013, in Goodyear.

Mr. Grierson was born May 12, 1928, in Casper, Wyo., to Charles B. Grierson and Jean Dotson.

He was a member of the Musicians Guild and Shriners of America and owned Viking Restaurant in Casper, Wyo.

He was preceded in death by one son, Daryl Grierson.

He is survived by five daughters, Lana Ante, Linda Brewer, Charyl Ray, Kimberly Ahrens and Sabrina Gant; one son, Charles B. Grierson III; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Private services will be held.

Jack C. Howell
Jack C. Howell, 65, of Phoenix and formerly of Tolleson died June 25, 2013.

Mr. Howell was born Feb. 2, 1948, in Boise, Idaho, to Jack Sr. and Ruth Howell.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; three sons, Mark, Robbie and Vincent; two brothers, Colin and Jay; two sisters, Tammy and Pamela; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Advantage Crystal Rose Funeral Chapel, 9155 W. Van Buren St., Tolleson.


George Mendoza Sr.
George Mendoza Sr., 59, of buckeye died June 17, 2013, at West Valley Hospital.

Mr. Mendoza was born Aug. 18, 1953, in Coolidge to Luis and Socorro Mendoza. He worked on different farms in the area.

He is survived by his wife, Soledad; two daughters, Vanissa Ward and Stella Mendoza; and two sons, Esteban and George Mendoza Jr.

A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. today at Ganley’s Buckeye Funeral Home, 104 E. Baseline Road in Buckeye.


Justin William Rodriguez
Justin William Rodriguez, 21, of Goodyear died June 2, 2013, after he collapsed while hiking at White Tank Mountain Regional Park in Waddell.

Mr. Rodriguez was born Nov. 6, 1991, in Torrance, Calif., to William and Rita Rodriguez.

He was a student of Northern Arizona University and was majoring in forestry to become a park ranger. He also ran his own record label.

He is survived by his parents, William and Rita; and one brother, Joseph Rodriguez.

Memorial services haven’t been scheduled.

Jose Gonzales Soto
Jose Gonzales Soto, 53, of Goodyear died June 13, 2013, in Goodyear.

Mr. Soto was born Sept. 12, 1959, in Eloy to Miguel R. and Josephine Soto.

He is survived by two children, Eli and Keren Jael Soto; two brothers, Manuel and Robert Soto, both of Avondale; and two sisters, Carmen Barreras of Phoenix and Lorenza Lopez of Avondale.

Services will be at 10 a.m. July 2 at Templo Bautista Antioquia, 12610 W. County Line in Avondale. Interment will follow at Resthaven Park Cemetery, 6450 W. Northern Ave. in Glendale.

Funeral arrangements were made by Advantage Crystal Rose in Tolleson.


James B. Stewart
James B. Stewart, 84, of Avondale died June 5, 2013, at Golden Springs Care Home in Surprise.

Mr. Stewart was born July 25, 1928, in Tennessee.

He moved to Arizona in 1954 and worked at Ameron Pipe for 25 years, before starting his own construction company in 1976. He retired in 1992.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Imogene Stewart.

He is survived by one son, Bob Stewart; two grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. His other son, Ken Stewart died June 6.

Services were held June 9 at Avenidas Funeral Chapel in Avondale.


Kenneth W. Stewart
Kenneth W. Stewart, 61, of Avondale died June 6, 2013, in Avondale.

Mr. Stewart was born Sept. 25, 1951, in Clinton, Ky.

He grew up in Tempe and moved to Avondale in 1966. He graduated from Agua Fria High School in 1969.

He worked in construction as a superintendent, installing underground utilities, before going to work for the city of Avondale as a utility inspector.

He is survived by one brother, Bob Stewart.

A memorial service was held June 22.
