Lady Phoenix volleyball ranked No. 3 in Division V

Tonopah Valley did what it has done best on the volleyball court all season Tuesday night: Roll through the competition.

The Lady Phoenix took care of business in its match against Buckeye Oddysey Institute Tuesday, winning in straight sets 25-9, 25-10, 25-15.

I thought they played as a team like I knew they could play,” Tonopah Valley coach Ed Andersson said.

The win moved Tonopah Valley to 10-0 in power-points games, where they haven't lost a set yet.

Definitely pleased with the team's progress,” Andersson said. “We're 10-0, haven't lost a game in any of these matches. The rest of the week we have two more games coming up, and I expect this team to go far.”

Tonopah Valley is ranked No. 3 in Division V, behind St. Michael and Pinon.

We're trying to stay grounded as much as we can,” Andersson said. “We missed state last year by 1.5 points. That's their motivation this year.”

The Lady Phoenix finished No. 20 in Division V in 2014 with a 2.7142 rating. The final playoff spot was held by Wilcox.

Andersson said the girls' hard work over the last few years is paying off this season.

Odyssey Institute rematch

Tonopah Valley went 1-1 against section rival Odyssey Institute in the Buckeye Girls Volleyball Invitational Sept. 25-26. The Lady Phoenix wasted no time setting the tone of this game on their way to victory.

Tonopah Valley fell behind early 2-0, but used runs of 9-0 and 7-0 to put the first game away, 25-9.

Game 2 had similar results. Odyssey Institute scored the first two points, but Tonopah Valley responded by getting the next 11 and never looked back in winning 25-10.

Tonopah Valley and Odyssey traded points in the third game, but the Lady Minotaurs only got as close as 15-12 before being outscored 10-3 to finish the match, 25-15.

Tonopah Valley acted aggressively and put the pressure on its opponents all night, starting at the serve line. The Lady Phoenix had 11 ace serves, and many more that left Odyssey unable to set up their attack game.

We've been working a lot on the serves since the last tournament,” Andersson said. “We [hit] a lot out, so we've been working real hard on that.”

The team also had 35 kills, led by senior captain Kassandra Renteria's 13.

[The] 35 kills shows a team effort,” Andersson said. “All of the players understand that it takes a team to win, not individuals.”

Renteria, the team's lone senior, also had three ace serves.

She's consistent,” Andersson said. “It's her senior year. Three years as a captain, she's finally able to come around and lead this team.

Junior Naomi Dalley had three kills, four aces and 11 set assists. Junior Christina Renteria finished with seven kills, two ace serves and two block kills. Freshman Taytum Brito had six kills, including a few well-placed tips over Odyssey's block attempts to steal a few points here and there.

Tonopah Valley traveled to San Tan Foothills Thursday, result unavailable at press time, and plays at home today against Bagdad.
