Turnovers may be a fine complement to an Oktoberfest celebration but they can prove quite deleterious to a football team trying to win an October game.

Westview committed three turnovers while visiting Phoenix Brophy Prep played a clean game and came away with a 35-21 victory Friday.

Westview quarterback Kordell Provchy threw a pair of interceptions and fumbled one time and Brophy converted two of the turnovers into touchdowns; one in each half.

"The turnovers hurt," coach Jeff Bowen said.

Provchy's first interception came late in the opening period and led to Brophy taking a 13-7 lead on a Clarence Clark 13-yard scoring run. The extra-point attempt was blocked by Seivion Morris.

The second interception came late in the final quarter and allowed Brophy to open up a 35-21 lead.

Zach Kotoske picked off Provchy's pass at the Brophy 48 and returned it to the Westview 26.

Three plays later, quarterback Tyler Bruggman connected on a 9-yard scoring pass to tailback Marche Dennard.

Westview had one last chance to score and perhaps recover an onside kick but the drive ended when Provchy fumbled the ball away at the Brophy 32, dashing any hopes the Knights had of victory.

The final drive was set up by a 54-yard kickoff return by Rene Corral to the Brophy 26.

"We did tonight what we do every week," Bowen said. "We just came up short tonight. It wasn't for lack of effort."

Fast start
The game began like it was going to be a high-scoring affair. Each team scored a touchdown just over three minutes into the contest.

Brophy got a 40-yard scoring run by Dennard to take a 7-0 led with 11:06 left in the opening quarter.

The Knights answered with a five-play, 65-yard drive that culminated in a 36-yard touchdown pass for Provchy to tight end Isaiah Burks.

The Broncos went up 20-7 on Clarks' scoring run and a 4-yard burst by Dennard with 8:02 remaining in the first half.

Westview managed to close the gap to 20-14 on the ensuing possession when Provchy ran the ball into the end zone from 2 yards out.

Brophy came right back to score just before halftime on a 59-yard scoring toss from Bruggman to Clark, who got open when the cornerback slipped to the ground.

The drive was set up by a 25-yard kickoff return by Devon Allen that put the ball at the Brophy 37.

2nd-half comeback attempt
Westview got back in the game by dominating the third quarter.

The Knights took the second-half kickoff and marched 80 yards in 17 plays, consuming 10:21, to get within 27-21 on Provchy's 5-yard run on fourth-and-four.

"It was an option to our big fullback, Ardis [Palmer] and I kept the ball," Provchy said. "Our guards, Matt Arenas and Essie Weaver, got a big push."

"They hit the big pass right before halftime and that hurt but the kids responded with that great drive to start the second half," Bowen said. "Our offense can grind with anybody. We thought if we could come out at the start of the second half and score, and get within six, we would have a chance to win."

Westview did have that chance to win when its defense came up with a big stop on Brophy's next possession.

The Knights defense stopped the Broncos at the Westview 45 and forced a punt that was downed at the 10 with 9:05 play.

"I looked up at the clock and thought, 'If we can put together another long [time-consuming] drive, we can win,'" Bowen said.

It was not to be.

The Knights advanced to their own 32 but were pushed back five yards by a penalty, setting up a fourth-and-seven situation.

Provchy dropped back to pass on fourth down but his pass sailed over the receiver's head, seemingly ending the drive. However, a roughing the passer penalty against Brophy advanced the ball to the Westview 42 and gave the Knights new life.

That life was sucked out of the Knights two plays later when Kotoske intercepted Provchy's pass.

"Their kid may a great play on the ball," Bowen said. "That's all you can ask for is a chance to win."

Westview piled up 17 first downs and ran for 247 yards and passed for 82.

Morris rushed for a game-high 116 yards on 18 carries. He ripped off four runs of 10 yards of more. He also added a pass reception for 24 yards.

"I'll take Seivion in a big game any time," Bowen said. "We wanted to run Seivion between the tackles."

Ardis Palmer added 54 yards on 10 attempts, Provchy ran the ball 12 times for 27 yards and two touchdowns and Rene Corral contributed six rushes for 39 yards.

"An unsung hero for us was Rene Corral," Bowen said. "He ran plays to the other side of Seivion's runs."

Provchy was 5 for 12 passing for 82 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

Morris, Palmer, Burks, Ryan Girk and D.J. Townsend each caught a pass.

Brophy had 13 first downs and gained 124 yards on the ground and 207 through the air.

Bruggman completed 12 of 18 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns.

"We got to Bruggman," Bowen said. "He is a Division I player, but we did some good things to slow him down."

Dennard led the Broncos on the ground with 87 yards on 13 carries.

Clark's five receptions for 132 yards and a score led Brophy.

"They are the No. 1 team in the state," Bowen said. "We showed that we can play with anybody."

Westview plays at Phoenix Carl Hayden (3-4) Friday. Hayden was a 45-14 loser to Phoenix Thunderbird Friday.
