The city of Avondale has named Jodie Novak as its new assistant director of development and engineering services.
Novak began working with Avondale in June 2018, serving as planning manager. In her role she oversaw the implementation of plans including the general plan, specific plans, zoning ordinance and design manuals.
Prior to joining Avondale, her career spanned 22 years of municipal planning experience, having worked for the planning departments of the cities of Phoenix and Chandler. She spent years as a professional planner overseeing complex, sensitive and high-profile developments; large master plans; and a variety of development types including multifamily residential, commercial, industrial, single-family, downtown redevelopment projects and more.
Novak holds a Bachelor’s of Science in journalism and political science from Northern Arizona University and a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from Arizona State University. She is also highly active in the American Planning Association, Arizona Planning Association, Urban Land Institute and the International City/County Management Association. She also is credentialed as a certified public manager.
The Avondale Department of Development and Engineering Services is responsible for the administration of the planning, engineering, development services center and building safety, whose functions include land-use planning, zoning, transportation, transit, sustainability, engineering plan review, capital improvement projects, code enforcement, building permits and inspections.
