Days before 2020 NASCAR Championship Weekend, the city of Avondale renamed a portion of Indian Springs Road after Jimmie Johnson, the racing legend.
Johnson is a seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, sharing the all-time record with stock car racing legends Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt.
The city installed two street signs on Indian Springs Road, one at the south end of the Avondale Boulevard Bridge, facing north, and the other placed just west of the El Mirage Road, facing west.
There is also a street name sign for Jimmie Johnson Drive at the intersection with El Mirage Road. That stretch of road corresponds to the length of the Phoenix Raceway racetrack, where Johnson raced until his retirement this year. Phoenix Raceway intends to change its physical address to reflect the name change.
NASCAR recently announced that it will bring the Championship Weekend back to Maricopa County in 2021.
