Avondale police

The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety awarded the Avondale Police Department $25,000 to step up its DUI enforcement efforts.

The grant will “help the police department more effectively combat DUI violations in the city,” said Avondale police spokesman Jaret Redfearn.

The funds will be used to cover overtime costs for public safety personnel involved in enhanced DUI enforcement in the city.

The GOHS awarded Avondale a year-long contract of $25,000 to meet the following goals and objectives:

• Increase enforcement capabilities by implementing additional personnel through overtime to participate in DUI enforcement activities.

• Prevent the number of alcohol related injuries from rising over the previous year’s total.

• Conduct DUI Task Force operation and extensive patrols through Sept. 30, 2021.

• Work closely with the community to promote traffic safety programs.
