A Goodyear Police officer shot a fleeing suspect just after midnight Thursday, March 12, according to police spokeswoman Lisa Berry. The suspect, who allegedly was armed, was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition.

The suspect allegedly attempted to break into a woman’s apartment.

“Upon arrival officers contacted the suspect at which time he shoved an officer and fled on foot,” Berry said. “During the foot pursuit, the suspect, 23-year-old Malaki Cox, displayed a gun.

“The officer perceived an immediate threat and fired (a) service weapon, striking the suspect. Cox was transported to the hospital and is currently in stable condition and expected to survive.”

The incident took place at Desert Sage Apartments, 1737 N. Central Avenue.
