Kids in School

"Here’s what we can do, working together as a community, to ensure that this school year is a safe and successful one."

School is back in session! To all teachers, parents and students, I wish you all a safe and happy 2019-20 school year. I share your excitement on all the learning and knowledge that will take place in the months ahead.

Here’s what we can do, working together as a community, to ensure that this school year is a safe and successful one.

School zone safety: Keep our kids who walk, bike or take the bus to school safe. Pay attention to school zones and reduce speeds to 15 mph. (Did you know that fines for exceeding the speed limit in a school zone can be up to $505?)

If you wish to report speeding or dangerous driving in a school zone, or in your neighborhood, don’t hesitate to reach out to the traffic hotline, where you can report traffic safety concerns. Avondale residents can call the hotline number at 623-333-7013.

Safe routes to school: One way to reduce traffic in school zones, increase physical activity and build healthy habits is to encourage walking to school. Children should walk in groups or with an adult to ensure their safety.

Make every school day count: Did you know that missing just two days of school a month can put your child at risk for academic failure? Show your child attendance truly matters to you and that you won’t allow an absence unless he/she is truly sick. Build a habit of attendance at an early age.

Keep track of your child’s progress: Get to know your child’s teachers and stay on top of their academic progress to make sure they’re on track to succeed this school year.

We all have a stake in our students’ success — let’s do our part to help them aspire, achieve and accelerate!
