Desert Edge coach Jose Lucero is set to take over as football coach of Saint Mary’s Catholic High in Phoenix.
"Coach Lucero’s devotion to the Catholic faith, his love of Saint Mary’s, and his proven record of success as a head coach make him the perfect fit for this job,” Saint Mary's Athletic Director Greg Fahrendorf said in a press release Friday afternoon.
Lucero leaves Desert Edge after a short but successful run leading the Scorpions.
The Scorpions reached the playoffs each season under Lucero. Desert Edge reached the 4A championship round earlier in December and the semifinals in 2018. Lucero took over after years as an assistant coach under Rich Wellbrock, who led the Scorpions to a state title in 2015.
He also spent one year as coach of North Canyon High in Phoenix.
Players and coaches met Friday afternoon at the school, where Lucero officially announced it to the team.
"I am extremely excited and very blessed to be back at Saint Mary's as the new Head Football Coach," Lucero said in the release. "There is no school or community in the state of Arizona that has the same type of tradition and history as our SM.
"My family, like many Saint Mary’s families, bleeds green and we are all ready to come home to SM. I can't wait to get to work on building a program that our entire Saint Mary's community will be proud of.”
